Getting Started with Slimefun

Slimefun is a complex plugin that adds hundreds of new items, machines, and systems to Minecraft without requiring any client mods. On our server, we run the experimental build of Slimefun for Minecraft 1.21.8, which means you get access to the latest features of vanilla Minecraft, while enjoying the challenge of Slimefun 4 before it is fully ready for the new build.

There is unfortunately a notably toxic attitude pervasive in the Slimefun discord community that I have not encountered from the devs of other plugins, and after more than a year, many aspects of Slimefun 4 are not ready for the latest Minecraft version release, nor will they in all likelihood before the next big version is released. Forget about getting any kind of update either, as your inquires will be met with condescention, sarcasm, and all out hostility as they make the minimal but consistent effort to post their automated replies which tell you absolutely nothing.

So, with 100s of servers using Slimefun and more than a dozen quality addons, there currently is no alternative but to patiently wait for whatever crumbs are thrown our way, or find someone with the time and expertise to fork versions of addons in the meantime. It is a free plugin after all, though an open-source free plugin without an update in over a year begs the question of how many devs does it take to screw in a lightbulb…or something to that effect. Actually, I think a more observation is that Mojang p**sed off a lot of devs with their playerhead changes especially, and those who are forking and fixing the addons of Slimefun are keeping the fixes for their own servers.

That being said, we have the following addons, and we are extremely grateful to the devs who took the time to update these addons so Blockhead Odyssey and others can enjoy them!

FastMachines (Slimefun Addon)

FastMachines is an addon for Slimefun 4 that improves the speed of certain machines. Instead of replacing machines, it adds upgraded versions of existing Slimefun blocks that process items much faster. These machines are designed for players who are ready to scale up their production and don’t want to wait on slow, early-game automation.

1. What FastMachines Does

Normally, Slimefun machines like the Ore Crusher, Compressor, or Electric Smeltery take several seconds per operation. With FastMachines installed, you can unlock faster tiers of those same machines. These upgraded blocks keep the same recipes and functionality, but they cut the processing time down significantly, letting you handle bulk production without endless waiting.

2. Unlocking FastMachines

Just like normal Slimefun items, FastMachines recipes appear in your Slimefun Guide once you’ve unlocked the required research. You will usually need to craft the regular version of a machine first before the faster variant is available. This progression ensures players can’t skip directly to late-game speeds.

3. Examples of FastMachines
  • Fast Ore Crusher — Processes ores and doubles them more quickly.
  • Fast Compressor — Compacts dusts and ingots at higher speed.
  • Fast Electric Smeltery — Smelts large batches of dusts and alloys faster.
  • Fast Grinder — Breaks down resources rapidly for mass production.

These aren’t “new” machines with new recipes; they’re upgraded versions of the old ones, built for efficiency and speed.

4. Power Requirements

Keep in mind that faster machines require more energy per tick than their normal counterparts. Be sure your power network can handle the additional load. If your machines are stalling or not running, you may need to expand your generators or add capacitors before you can support multiple FastMachines at once.

5. When to Upgrade

– If your ore grinder or smeltery is always backlogged, it’s time to move up.
– If you are producing alloys or dusts in bulk, faster compressors and grinders will save you hours.
– Late-game farms and automation setups work best with fast machines to avoid bottlenecks.

6. Tips for Using FastMachines

– Place your fast machines close to power sources to minimize cable loss.
– Use capacitors to buffer energy so your machines don’t stall mid-process.
– Mix normal and fast machines — you don’t need to upgrade everything at once.
– Watch server performance: fast machines process more items at once, so chunk hoppers and cargo networks may need upgrades too.

Conclusion

FastMachines is the natural next step for Slimefun players who have outgrown the base machines and need industrial-scale production. If you’re running big farms, massive smelting operations, or just want to cut down on wait time, upgrading to FastMachines is one of the most effective ways to boost your Slimefun automation.
